Mexican Travel Alert Extended to October
The US State Department has extened their travel alert for the Mexican border region until October 15th, 2008. According to a recent artical in The Brownsville Herald the alert has been extended due to on-going security concerns in the border region.
“Earlier this year, the Mexican government ordered the deployment of military police to Matamoros, Reynosa and Nuevo Progreso to look for local connections to the Notorious Drug Cartel.
The raids came after weeks of violence as the county’s military and federal police battled powerful drug cartels in the cities along Mexico’s northern border.”
Although there is a travel alert the State Depertment isn’t recommending that visitors avoid the region, rather they recommend that visitors be aware of their surroundings.
I cross to Mexico daily for work, and while there is a noticable military presense at the border and in the city I have not been concerned about my safety either before or after military moved to the borders. Most of the regional violence has been directed a law enforcement, governmental officials and those involved in illegal activites. When visiting the region be aware of where you are, if you are unfamiliure with the citys leave before nightfall, but otherwise enjoy your visit.
